History enthusiast tells the untold story on life of Sambhaji

Pune, June 18: THERE’S a difference between what people know about Sambhaji and what he truly was. I wanted to find proof of this, hence my research,” says Advocate Anant Darwatkar, who finally succeeded in getting a part of his research published in the form of Adwitiya Chhatrapati Shri Sambhaji Maharaj, Volume 1.
The 658-page book in Marathi that was released at Balgandharva Rangmandir on Monday, is an introduction to the life of Sambhaji Raje Bhosale, son of the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji.
Moreover, Darwatkar, has been researching on Sambhaji for the past 35 years. A nature enthusiast who has visited almost every fort in Maharashtra, got interested in Indian history, especially Chhatrapati Shivaji and his son. “Once I started reading on them, I realised there was little information available on Sambhaji and most of whatever was, was untrue,” says Darwatkar, who has spent the last eight months working on the volume.
The book traces Sambhaji’s childhood, his education and training. “It also throws light on Maloji, Shahaji and Shivaji, the three kings who preceded Sambhaji ,” says Darwatkar, who got archival material and historic letters on the Maratha dynasty from the Bharat Itihas Sanshodhan Mandal, Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute and Deccan College.
For instance he procured Aurangzeb’s book on his hukumnama and books by Parmanand, the famous writer, poet and Sanskrit scholar. “Parmanand wrote Shivbharat on Chhatrapati Shivaji and Anupuraan on Sambhaji. Unfortunately, nobody has been able to translate Anupuraan till now. But through his literary contribution, Parmanand has elaborated Sambhaji’s finer points — his intelligence, foresightedness, progressive attitude and sensitivity. He was a capable king-in-the-making,” points out Darwatkar.
In his lifetime, Sambhaji even wrote books— Boodhbhushanam in Sanskrit and Saatshatak, Nakshika and Nayika Bhed in Hindi. “While Boodhbhushanam talks about politics, governance and defence strategies, Nakshika and Nayika Bhed are based on how women have been perceived and idolised over the centuries. Unfortunately, even these authentic works have never been translated,” mentions Darwatkar. His book is a part of 4,000 pages that he has written during the course of this research in the past three decades. “The proceeding volumes will be based on Sambhaji’s life from 1668 to 1679 and his trade dealings with the British, French and Portuguese, among other issues,” says Darwatkar, a practising civil lawyer and history enthusiast.
Darwatkar even formed the Purandar Smriti Mandal in 2001 to spread awareness about Indian history. And every year on Sambhaji’s Jayanti is celebrated at the Purandar Fort, where he delivers talks on the legendary warrior.

संभाजी राजांचा अभिशिक्त युवराज म्हणुन हिंदवी स्वराज्याच्या प्रजेने स्वीकार केल्या नंतर ही त्यांच्या संबंधीच्या कंडया पिकविन्याची कुटिल कारस्थाने ब्राह्मणमंत्र्याकडून चालु होती.

या पूर्वी ज्या आरोपांचा उल्लेख केलेला आहे,त्याही पेक्षा अतिशय भयानक स्वरूपाचा आरोप म्हणजे दस्तूरखुद्द शिव छत्रपतिंवरील विषप्रयोगाचा...तो एका मुंबईकर इंग्रज पत्रकाराने सुरतेला पाठविलेल्या पत्रात केला आहे.या पत्रात संभाजीने शिवाजीला विषप्रयोग केल्याचे लोक बोलतात,असा आरोप केलेला आहे.या प्रकारची अफवा संभाजीला राज्य मिलु नये म्हणुन ब्राम्हणमंत्र्यानी पसरविली असावीत व त्यामागे लोकांची मने कलुषित व्हावीत हां उद्देश असावा असे डॉ. कमल गोखले ह्यानी म्हटले आहे (संदर्भ - २)
